The Idea
No client, no brief. Just me deciding I wanted to build something whimsical for once.
The site is for Mochi and Donut, two dogs with the kind of faces that deserve their own corner of the internet. The concept was to recreate that early 2000s screensaver feeling, where shapes bounce endlessly around a light background, ricocheting off the edges in a completely mesmerising loop. You know the one.
Click on either of them and a modal pops up with their photo and a little bio. Donut is a certified floor napper and professional treat inspector. Mochi has strong opinions about squirrels.
Out of My Comfort Zone
This was not a natural fit for how I usually think about the web. My instinct is toward grids, structure, and clear hierarchy. Making something bouncy and playful meant fighting those instincts the whole way through.
The hardest part was giving myself permission to let the page breathe weird. There is no above-the-fold hero. There is no call to action. It is just Mochi and Donut, bouncing around, waiting to be clicked.
What I Took Away
Building something that isn’t trying to convert anyone or funnel anyone anywhere is genuinely refreshing. The whole point of this site is just to make someone smile.
It reminded me that the web doesn’t always have to be serious, and that giving myself unusual constraints can push me toward solutions I wouldn’t have considered otherwise.
Mochi and Donut approved.
